L TopExplanation
Lama A title for experienced and learned religious teachers, often casually used for members of the clergy in general. (Tibetans take the word as la na me pa "unsurpassable", plus ma, "mother", alluding to the compassion a mother has for her only child.
Lha tong [Skt.Vipassana ] Meditation that develops insight into the nature of mind. It is sometimes described as analytical meditation. It is one of the two types of meditation found in all Buddhist traditions, the other being tranquillity meditation (Skr.Link-Refsamatha; Tib.Link-Refshi nay)
Lung The Wang and the Tri, are part of the initiation into the Diamond-Way. In the West a lung is given to connect the practitioner with the protection and inspiration of a Buddha-aspect. Through the lung, the practitioner obtains complete permission and Link-Refempowerment to meditate on the specific aspect.
However, without having received all three of the following, the results of a meditation would not be complete:
  • Lung: transmission through hearing,
  • Wang: power-transmission of the teacher
  • Tri: oral explanation of the meditation itself
Liberation [Skt.Abhimukti] Once you recognize the emptiness of mind, you reach liberation from the involuntary cycle of existence. You become liberated from all perturbing feelings. However, it is a state where you have not reached complete Link-Refenlightenment and have not gained complete understanding of "the way things are."
